General Description
This site provides a listing of the courses, dates and locations for training required by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in order for a individual to be certified as a breath alcohol testing operator in accordance with §32-5A-194 Code of Alabama, 1975, as amended, and the Alabama Administrative Code, Chapter
370-1-1-.01.

Mission Statement
The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, Implied Consent Section exists to:
  • Provide law enforcement with an effective and defensible breath alcohol testing program for use in enforcing the DUI Laws of the State of Alabama.
  • Provide those citizens directed to submit breath samples for the detection of alcohol with the most comprehensive and scientifically reliable program available.
In accordance with our mission we currently offer three classes to law enforcement personnel.

Breath Alcohol Testing New Operator Training Course
Completion of this one day course will certify attendees to conduct a breath alcohol test using the Alabama configured Draeger Alcotest 7110 MK-III. The course is comprised of two portions; 1) a lecture discussing the theory of operation and the features unique to the Alabama program, which concludes with a written proficiency examination and 2) a practical laboratory exercise and examination which requires “hands-on” operation of the instrument by trainees. Applicants must be an employee of a federal, state, county or municipal law enforcement agency to be accepted into this training.

Annual Breath Alcohol Testing Operator Recertification Course
In order for an operator to maintain an “active” operator status they must attend a recertification course once a calendar year. This course is comprised of two portions; 1) a lecture discussing relevant legal issues surrounding breath alcohol testing and a review of the theory of operation of the instrument, which concludes with a written proficiency examination and 2) a practical laboratory exercise which requires “hands-on” operation of the instrument by trainees. Only employees of federal, state, county, or municipal law enforcement agencies who have previously completed the Breath Alcohol Testing Operator Training Course and who have not missed two consecutive years of recertification training will be accepted into this course.

Alabama Preliminary Breath Testing Instrument Course
Completion of this course constitutes approved training as required by Chapter 370-1-1-.05 of the rules of Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (ADFS) Chemical Test for Intoxication. This course is designed to provide instruction in the operation a PBT device, to include calibration techniques, troubleshooting and guidelines for establishing a quality assurance/control program for each department. Applicants must be an employee of a federal, state, county or municipal law enforcement agency to be accepted into this training. Online registration is not currently available for this course.
